In Arizona, it's known about, but there's still alot of misconceptions. It is definitely seen as an "emo" thing, like everyone else has been saying. I had a behavioral health tech come straight out and tell me i was doing it for attention. she hadn't even ever talked to me before. so yeah, i don't know about the U.K., but it's not well understood in America.
