Mothers and babies mostly died from puerperal sepsis, abruption, haemorrhage, premature and obstructed labour. All of which still exist today and are nothing to do with being overdue.
The placenta begins to decline in some pregnancies
after 42 weeks. Some, not all. Extra monitoring is available for women who choose it until their bodies go into labour.
