I never trusted the requests for a phone # to "protect" me lol. I never allowed sharing over apps either. It seemed crazy to me that I was also asked to make comments under a news article on many news sites using Facebook. I never opened an instagram either (FB took it over). Today I read about Skype being monitored. We know about Google's hunger for info. All the big web services are more invasive than they've let on but the real problem is how governments are actively incorporating these services into their own agencies. The US was warned by Russia and Saudis about Boston bomber and they did nothing. On the other hand they are targeting people over their political views and using tax people to harass them. The US gov originally allowed for phone snooping on foreign calls but 10 years latter its been twisted so that the FISA courts (Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act) are now being used to take the phone records of millions of domestic callers - something they were never intended for. Fair to say things are out of hand.
