No, you're right. It doesn't make everyone gain weight but it does make a lot of people gain weight. It's important to be aware of the possibility of it happening so you can keep an eye on your weight and try to make healthier choices. For some, it doesn't matter how healthy they eat or how much exercise they do they still gain weight. Gaining a few pounds isn't the worst thing in the world if it gets your mood under control for many people but for some it can cause a whole different problem.
It comes down to weighing the risks. If you're mood is causing a lot of problems for you then you need to do something about it. If I'm remembering right Seroquel starts working fairly quickly which is a bonus. I was given it in a crisis to get things under control quick before things escalated to a point where I wouldn't come back. Lithium can take longer to get it regulated in your system, find the right balance etc.
