I had that problem too on my brief time on pof. At one stage I was messaging like 8 guys all at once!
I never met anyone in person from it, I was just looking for someone to chat with really. And then I kind of got back with this guy I'd been seeing anyway so I don't need it anymore. It's kind of a buzz when you get a nice message though, and yes I got the weird ones too.
Anyway, good luck and I agree about looking on general interest sites too. I know someone who met their guy through a My Little Pony site!
