I get spots due to hormones. When I was between pregnancies I had a chin full of spots the whole time. Now I'm pregnant again they've totally gone. So mine are definitely related to my hormones. Before that I only got one spot a month around my period.
I know you've mentioned pre menopause stuff before so it could be that.
