I got to 6th form college, and I love it :)
It seems to be composed of a lot of people who found school hard for one reason or another - bullying, illness, ADD, dislike of teachers, dislike of people..
You only have to be in when you have a lesson, the rest of the time you can go home if you have time, or anywhere you like!
Also, I'm not sure if this is something wider, but recently I've been having emotional problems and my tutor told me if I thought it would help I could come in once a week, collect the work, and do it at home until I felt able to rejoin the classes.
The important point is not to give up. There are definitely different options. It might not be practical for you, but in America I think you can go straight to uni with English GCSEs, but be there for 4 years.
It's not that you're stupid, like you said. It's not that you're unruly, or can't be bothered, and places you apply to will consider your own personal merit if they are worth it :)
