I dont think you have to get person specific presents, just stock a few up then when there is an occasion just give someone something. At first i felt a bit cheap giving people stuff i paid a few quid for but then i just thought 1 - they will never know and 2 - it has a much higher rrp.

want I say screw what people want and get them something else, i got sick of the whole i want this and this and don't want that or that. Its the thought that counts and if they dont like it i just think well didn't spend that much anyway.

A lot of people wait because they might be wanting to buy nice gift sets, which tend to only appear around Christmastime. And if they have kids then they need to wait because if they buy something in May then the child will probably have lost interest come December!
Christmas sales for the gift sets, i got a few half price. Also i think its different if you have kids that are of that age where they "want" certain things, in that case people are better off saving during the year than maxing out their credit cards come christmas.
