I understand your point and I think the others have as well. But I disagree that a thread becomes owned by the public, as such, just because it's popular. I think that this would be impossible to use in practice and would only lead to arguments and drama over what happens when threads like this have issues and want to be closed etc. I really think that the creator of the thread has to retain the ownership of it - this means it's always clear to everyone.
