Alcohol suppresses the rease of glutamate, which is the brains main excitoray neurotransmitter, and enhances the activity of GABA, which is the main inhibitory neurotransmistter. This results in areas of the brain being underused as a result of too little excitation [see above] which can cause apoptosis.
