I have been in hospital twice
my experiences weren't completely awful, but I was pretty boring and scary the first time
and I went in for a suicide attempt both times. I think the experience will depend on the nurses that are there and the doctor who watches you. (But I am in the United States so I don't know if the hospital is different in the UK or in your country)
My first time I stayed for three days in the ER. I pretty much laid in bed the entire time and had to be checked on every few hours by the nurses and psych. My recently visit I only stayed for a night and I was released the next morning provided I am being under heavy surveillence by a social worker, who basically calls and comes over to see how I am doing.
I think also, it depends on the wars you are in, how long you stay, and why you are staying. For me it felt like prison and being in a cage but I always feel very very safe and taken care of. So, it depends really
