Asus actually has the best reliability rating (including over Apple). A problem is that even good laptops have a higher repair rate than desktops over a three year ownership period. With the good brands its 1 in 7 laptops need a repair. With lesser brands its 1 in 5.
Sometimes one model is better than another. In forums dedicated to laptops they discuss the differences. One Sony laptop will come from one factory and another from another factory. One factory (and/or its manufacturing supplies such as bad chips from China) will have issues and another one won't.
I would get a desktop myself and have a laptop as a backup. If I had to have a laptop I would keep try Asus. I've built all my computers with their stuff and rarely had any issues compared to other brands
