I kept gerbils for years - they gnaw everything & anything and v v quickly. Plastic, wood, cardboard all fine - they're not eating it, just chewing it to bits - it will build up in the cage & they may use it for bedding. I used to chuck loads of loo rolls in, along with tougher cardboard tubes & chunky sticks. Its good for them - keeps them occupied & keeps their teeth down. Bad things to chew = electrical wires! so check when they're running around freeee!
