Hi
I take codeine for IBS - personally i dont get that good feeling from it!!! And i am not hooked- been on it for 2 years but take say 1 a month, 2 in a week then again in a month etc - its my step up from immodium when needed.
However it is very common to get hooked on, and my doc only perscribres because i take so little. I sometimes take for back pain in winter months but again this is only as and when and not much more use than stated. Doctors always give me the addiction speach and would like me to use some other meds for ibs BUT this does work and help so i dare not change...i may change if i was needing to use more however.
Log term you have issues with tolerance- if your taking for pain then over use will not help with the pain...your brain can also stop making endorphines so increase in pain or more pain felt.
Can harm liver, blood pressure, stomach ulcers.
You will also get widthdrawal symptoms if stopping long term use.
Please go to your doctors, they will help you x
