You can buy like kits that have instructions and threads and beads and stuff in them, usually in the likes of the poundshop or arts section of a toystore, or Argos even. My niece had one a few weeks ago, and you took like 3 threads in 3 collours, and fold them in half, and at the folded bit tie them so that there is a small loop. Then like split them into 3 groups of two threads and plait them. Then further down you can split it into two groups of 3 threads and make two plaits beside each other for a different design.

I don't know if that makes any sense at all, it had little pictures to explain it.
