I don't know where in Canada you are but from my experience at small stations and at the large one in Vancouver all they did was open my bag for a second and look inside and asked if that was in fact a lap-top in my bag. They didn't do more with my checked luggage than throw it in the bus. I think you'd be fine packing them with your checked luggage-I doubt they'll pay much attention.
Trips can be stressful enough as it is without having to deal with forcing yourself into a withdrawal like phase.
