A chat room for the debate sounds good, better even.
I would still insist that it doesn't make the debate grossly informal.
Personally, I would like it if..
1. The debate structure remains. Meaning there would still be "teams", those teams would alternate reactions (but if it's a chat debate it would flow much quicker. Once all people on a each team have spoken, the floor could be opened to less restricted discussion.), etc etc.. How it would work setting up and preparing teams for a chat room debate, I can work on it if you'll permit me that much.
I don't care much for a mess of people all shouting in unison "I THINK SUCH-AND-SUCH AND YOU BETTER LISTEN TO ME!"
2. If the current mods are going to oversee the debate, I would like for them to be familiar with how to moderate a debate. No offence. Just being able to kick rude people is not enough. A debate moderator controls the debate. Again, this is an example of the formality I like.
