Laxatives basically make your bowels lazy over time and will mean your muscle tone of the colon [large intestine] is weakened. The problem comes when your muscle tone of the colon isn't strengthening quickly enough whilst comming off laxatives to make the contractions necessary to pass the digested food through you. If you have a restrictive ED you need to be eating enough food to give your faeces bulk and to provide your body with the nutrients to repair the damage caused by the laxatives too so you need to eat bulky foods with lots of fibre to help this process.

I was always told to reduce laxatives by 10% each week and if your having problems going to the toilet during this rate of reduction, try Fibogel/Ispaghula husk (make sure you drink lots with this medication, it needs water to work), also drinking fruit juices such as prune juice will add fibre naturally.

If that doesn't help, you definitely need to go to your Dr for help.
