Yes I think you should ask for a different medication. I avoid SSRI's completely because they make me manic (the medication you're on is an SSRI) they aren't usually advised to be taken for bipolar, on their own anyway.
..are completely different medications. Lithium would definitely be worth a try as it's a mood stabiliser.
Valium is very addictive though and won't work the same way.
