I used to always go swimming, don't anymore - why?
People stare and give me looks - why?
Because of my scars.

I used to hate going to P.E because of my scars(also my body), so I tried to get out of it, sometimes I did, sometimes I didn't.

If someone feels uncomfortable to do something/ showing something, then that's their choice. It's not an excuse, it's a choice based on something they feel uncomfortable doing/showing.
