To be perfectly honest, I'd prefer people correct me - you only learn through experience, and so people correcting me really does help me - basically what Rike and Irene mentioned.
I don't think it's got anything to do with 'putting people down', anyway.
And as mentioned before, incorrect grammar, punctuation or spelling can change the meaning of the sentence entirely, so it is fairly important.
