For other people on RYL...

At any point it's needed, really. I mean, there's a difference between needing some emotional support/encouragement/nice words, and then asking us to help where we clearly can't even if we WERE trained professionals because this is a support site on the internet.

For myself...

I think a big turning point is realising that you have to put in work yourself and that you can't rely on other people to "fix" you. That's the most empowering thing I can think of. You don't have to be recovering or thinking of recovery (I guess you'd class me as not trying to recover at the moment), and it doesn't even really depend on how well the mental health services are in your area. Knowing that you can put the work in to help yourself, that you are being proactive and doing something... costs nothing, but helps everything.
