It also depends which doctors how long it takes. I've been to three different doctors surgeries over the last few yrs for repeat prescriptions (you do need to take it back to your own, due to the way i've moved around they have all been my own at the time) and they all had different lengths of time. One was just 24hrs, one 2 working days and one up to 3 working days so ringing up the practice and finding out is the best way.
Most pharmacies now do the system where you hand in the repeat form to them, they will take it to your doctors and then collect it from the doctors (once the prescription has been printed and signed and then) and sort it all out for you to come and collect and just pick up your meds then which can be easier. Some pharmacies once on the record you can just ring up too and say what you want a repeat of. The one thing you have to make sure of is that the pharmacy collects/ takes prescriptions to YOUR doctors; some only do it to one, most a few of the local ones but if you're not on the list they can't do this.
This sort of service is available at Boots, Lloyds Pharmacy and some of the smaller chain/ independent pharmacies too so if it's easier for you it's worth asking. It depends whether you live closer to the doctors or the pharmacy I suppose!
