i can understand why it feels like a life sentence. and having a diagnosis for the first time kind of knocks the wind out of you. so many questions and fears - all perfectly okay to have and to ask.
if you had been diagnosed with diabetes, you'd have to watch out for fattening foods, sugary foods, have to have your feet checked, your eyes, your blood pressure etc. and you'd have to take insulin (depending upon the type of diabetes) for the rest of your life. but you come to terms with it. my dad has diabetes, and everything was up in the air after he found out. now it's like nothing's different. his life is normal.
with bipolar you need to watch out for things that affect or change with your mental health. and take meds. but i know a lot of people with bipolar who have very normal lives.
