male mods?
 

I know we as males are a rare breed but why don't we have more than one male chat, mod and none on the forums?

RYL is a mixed site there with more females than males so it makes sense that there are more female mods than males but there is no balance at all with no male forum mods. Maybe 1 or 2 male mods in the mix on the forums is better than none?

surely its better to have mods that can do the job rather than having mods that arent as suited, but being mods just cos theyre guys.

the mods dont discriminate against anyone, they just have a criteria that needs to be met, like knowing the rules, posting in the support froums, stuff like that.

that makes it sound like i think all the mods are perfect, i dont... im definately not perfect.

This is randomly appropriate for where my mind is at right now! I just sent an e-mail off to the austrlian youth forum having a go at them for claiming to represent all australian youth but only have reps from 3 states and 1 territory and completely missing out the other 4 states!

Anyways, I do agree with you fluffy. I know ryl is more females than males but surely one male mod (forum not just chat) would make sense... I mean... apart from James and Harley, and the one male chat mod... there are no males in staff positions....

Mods are picked from members that stand out to be mod material. It's not gender based. It's just by chance that it's happened this way to be honest.

I can't remember the last time we had males in staff positions... but if that's how it is, that's how it is!

I can see your point but I think Erin has clarified the reasons. Mods aren't picked to represent different groups. It would be hard to have at least a few mods for every gender, sexual orientation, race, country, religion, etc. I think your idea would make more sense when it comes to supporters, since sometimes people want to talk to someone who can relate to a gender-specific issue. I know sometimes I'd rather talk to fellow females about certain issues. Sometimes I'd rather talk to someone closer to my age or who has had similar life experiences to me. I don't know that it really matters where mods are concerned though.

I think it would be good, and I think that maybe it should be a goal to have a male mod on staff. Obviously there are criteria for mods that have to be met, but I think it would be a good goal to keep in mind.

Well...if we picked a mod purely on the fact he was a boy and didnt think about the qualities that we pick mods on,then we would be doing the community a diservice. We did have a lovely male mod before, but since he left there havent been many males who have stood out to fill the mod position!
I know I personally would be happy to have a male on the team and when we were recently discussing mods there was a male up for consideration, so they are about!If you are counting supporters as staff (which we should) then there is a male supporter too, but as you know there are a lot more girls around the site and therefor its understandable that the staff is a lot more female based.
But Id like to think we make the male members of staff comfortable enough, but I wouldnt like to choose a mod because he was male over a girl who had better skills than he did.

We had rob who was a forum mod and theres a male supporter.

surely this is a goal for the male members of the site, rather than the existing staff?
We cant make people act a certain way, everyone is free to use the site how they wish within the rules.

That's assuming they know what exactly would make them mod material. I know I have no idea. So maybe a pm or even a post about what makes someone "mod material". I don't know about the others, but I really can't tell much difference between "normal" members and the staff!

The problem with giving a criteria is that there are members who would do what they had to do to get a staff position,some people just want to climb the ladder. Plus it isnt always the same criteria....

I think it's something that has to come from both sides in order for change to happen. Males have to know they are welcome on RYL, but they also have to make themselves known.

Well, i think its things like having been here a while, interacting well with everyone else on the site, supporting people, sticking to the rules, demonstrating common sense etc etc.

just generally being a good bean.

the thing is, i dont think we (i say we like ive been doing it years rather than days.. sorry) can really say.. do this an you'll become a mod, because it means that either:
a) everyone that fits the 'criteria' will be wondering why they havent been modded yet.
and
b) it means that people may support/act a certain way for no other reason that personal gain and to be modded, rather than because they care about the people they are replying to.

does that make any sense? it probably sounds super jumbled.

Dave, Robert and Dom are some past male mods that spring to mind, and they were all fabtastic!

*facepalm* I forgot about Dom! Some vet I am....lol


Liv, I'm not saying that the male staff don't feel welcome, but with RYL being so female heavy I think many guys feel like they are out on the fringes being so out numbered.
