CAMHS waiting lists.

>=(

It's been ages now (actually lost track) and I have no offline support in the meantime (though seeing my GP next week to see if he was able to arrange any until the assessment). I hope this doesn't come out as ungrateful or something, I'm just struggling with stuff and feeling like they've forgotten me.

I guess I'm just looking for personal experiences here - has anyone had really long waiting times with CAMHS too?

I was lucky and got my assessment the day after I was referred but that was because it was an emergency. I think in general they do have quite long waiting lists so until they contact you I guess you'll have to rely on your GP. If you're actually worried that you've been forgotten then you could probably get your GP to contact them, I don't know. Sorry this probably wasn't very helpful lol.

I was lucky with CAMHS I got pushed through everything very quick because I was dangerously physically ill at the time but I have known people to have to wait months. Whereas I am havingt he same problem with adult services where there is a bloody long waiting list for everything.
Could you ask your GP to chase up whats going on and how much longer they think you will have to wait?

Hey sweetie, maybe you should try and chase it up with your doctor. I've heard a lot of people say that they've had to wait a long time to be assessed by them. I was very lucky as I got assessed two weeks after being referred but I was a high risk case apparently. I hope you don't have to wait too long.

Take care.

I too was lucky and only had to wait 2 days to be seen by my local camhs and later on with another team 2 days to be admitted as an inpatient in an adolescent unit(different area). Both times i was an emergency case.
It must be so hard on you having to wait, they wont have forgotten you hun theres probably a high demand on the service and not enough staff to deal with it. They also have to prioratise those who on paper need the services most. By no means saying you dont need it hun and its rediculous you have to wait Get your GP to keep pushing though. Do you have a counseller at your school/college that you could see in the meantime?
keep strong hun

I only waited a few weeks I think.

Get back to your GP and see if he can hurry it along.

We got a letter through and Mum had to ring up to say we wanted the appointment, etc. and apparently they asked if it was "urgent" and put it down as that so I don't know. I know that I can't go on with things the way they are, they've got all in all worse since I was referred.

Think I will chase it up with the GP next week, if not sooner. Thanks, guys. x

The adult service is even worse.
I've gone many, many months without seeing a psychiatrist and I take 300mg of Effexor. It's ****ing ridiculous.

Keep going back to your doctor to get yourself bumped up the list if you think you need it, I went from being at the bottom of the waiting list to the top eventually..

I live in the US where things are much different, we don't have to wait nearly as long to see mental health professionals. They are, however, extremley expensive.

Seeing your gp is definately a good idea, especially as seen as things have got worse. At the very least you'll be able to make sure you've not been forgotten, and at the best, you'll get bumped up the list. I've not had experience with CAMHS, but have with adult services and i saw my gp only to find out i'd missed the assessment appointment because i never recieved the letter! its so ridiculous.,... but unfortunately there is very high demand.

take care, and hope you get something soon,
jenx

i never went to camhs just cmht which i think i waited about 2-4wks, i cant remember!
but speak to your dr cos they can phone them for you to see if they can bump you up. if not, i know at cmht they have a on duty person who you can phone and speak to, so maybe if you have the number try and ring to see if there is someone to speak to

good luck sweetie xx

Finally, FINALLY, got the appointment through. It's the first one they had, on June 19th o_O I didn't know it was that busy, but apparently they got me as soon as a cancellation came through.

Thanks for all your support and experiences x

Sucks that it's still so far, but at least you have a date now. Its so much harder when you have no idea how long it'll be...

sunshine! 03-05-2009 12:21 PM

Woah, your CAMHS team must be busybusy! I got mine within a week, I think, and I don't know anyone who has had to wait more than 4. Good luck with it though. x

Oliviaface 03-05-2009 12:45 PM

Yeah, I was on CAHMS waiting list since a suicide attempt about a month ago, but had to be reintroduce into the system, so even though I was put down as extremely urgent I've only just got an appointment for this wednesday.
Busy time of year, obviously.
