Sleep paralysis support

I'm not sure if this is the right place or if it's already been done so I'm sorry in advance...

I just wanted to know if anybody else suffers from sleep paralysis. I thought this could be a good place to discuss it and support each other. I'm having difficulty with it at the moment to the point where I'm just terrified to go anywhere near sleep. I suffered a bit when I was younger and then there was a gap and over the past year or so it's been coming back worse and more frequently.

So, yes. Anybody else out there?

[For those that don't know, you can read about it here.]

I've had this a few times and it scares the **** out of me. I think it's related to how stressed / distressed I am.

it is a very scary phenomenon. i experience it but infrequently, and without the hallucinations. i wonder if talking to a therapist or complementary therapies would help reduce it for you?

I've had this quite a few times and it's really scary! It scares me more as I have a massive phobia of vampires and in Eastern Europe sleep paralysis is thought to mean a vampire is visiting you in their folklore.

I think you've got to come up with a plan of how to cope with it. Such as wait until you can move, turn the light on, have a drink of water and do some breathing exercises, at least thats what I do.

Yeah I get it but without the hallucinations. Its like I still dream/can feel the dream but, am not asleep and can't move. It's scary. I don't get it often though.

I find trying to move helps, like trying to wiggle my toes to start with.

I get it occasionally, it's scary as I usually think someone is suffocating me but I can't struggle or stop them. It's only occasional thank goodness, but I haven't been able to find a way of stopping it - I eventually wake up...

I've had it before and it scared me because I didn't know what it was and I thought someone was trying to kill me... *shudders* it still freaks me out. I don't know how to stop it.. i just kept trying to talk and eventually I could.. that seemed to help me be able to move.

Wow, thanks for the replies. It's nice to know I'm not alone...
I think if it carries on as it is I'm going to have to go see my GP, I read somewhere that they can prescribe something to help? I hope I don't have to though 'cause my GP's an idiotic arse and it'll just be easier not to but....anyway...

whirlpools 20-04-2009 08:59 PM

oh if they can prescribe something then it might be a good idea to see your GP? it's better than suffering - and if (s)he doesn't help it might be worth seeing a different GP. though i believe that if you're under a lot of stress it might be important to have someone to talk to as well as taking meds. xxx
