"would you save a stranger?" on C4?

So many stories of people just lettting such horrendous acts of cruelty and doing nothing about it, even when it's going on right in front of them.
How has the human race fallen so far?
I don't know how I would react. I think I would help. I've never been in a situation as terrible as the one's described on the show but I've been in small situations, like a scuffle in a pub that could have turned nasty; I've stepped in, despite the danger, and helped to keep the peace.

How the hell can someone just sit there when a person is getting beaten up right in front of them and not say or do a thing? it just boggles my mind. I can't wrap my brain around the concept that people would do nothing.

Field Of Paper Flowers 02-04-2009 09:53 PM

I was going to watch it but I couldn't be bothered to budge from my seat lol. =$

But with that kind of situation it would depend. I wouldn't want to witness someone getting hurt but I also wouldn't want to get myself stabbed.

Casper_Fading 02-04-2009 09:54 PM

I'm not watching it but there was something over here about accidents and stuff happening and no one calling 000 becasue they were all sure someone else would do it....

Queen Crabbit 02-04-2009 09:55 PM

There are some situations where I wouldn't step in - like the bloke that was killed because he tried to stop some kids phones being stolen. Sorry, but that wasn't worth his life. However, once the muggers/older kids had left, I'd go over, make sure everyone was okay, give them my phone to call their parents and call the police.

The girl on the bus was horrifying. I can't understand how nobody did anything.

Feel_Good_inc. 02-04-2009 09:58 PM

the girl on the bus is the one that stumps me the most.

Rawrk 02-04-2009 09:59 PM

Queen Crabbit 02-04-2009 10:01 PM

How has the human race fallen so far?
I don't think it's a modern construct at all. Hell, going right back we used to be in 'packs', looking after ourselves and our kin before all else.

I probably wouldn't intervene if I saw a situation arising, like some on the show. Why? Because I'm female, 5'2, and pathetically weak. I would actually achieve nothing other than getting myself hurt.

There are a number of factors in play here: firstly, cost-benefit. If it looks like it's going to be less beneficial to you to intervene, why would you? Yes, it may make you a good person, but if you get a broken nose out of it, or you can stay out and ring the police/get the bartender over, wouldn't that be the safest - and most beneficial - thing?
Also, group diffusion. The more of you there are, the less likely it is anybody will act - the 'somebody else will do it' idea.
And not everybody is a good person. Some people will avoid situations that don't involve them.

I probably wouldn't intervene, simply because I wouldn't have a leg to stand on, should this situation arise - but then, I also wouldn't have the strength to stand there and do nothing.

ah, i wrote an essay on this once... there are psychological theories about social cues and expectations and stuff... will find th eessay and theories later

*goes to watch on C4 +1 *

One couple helped a guy, one guy helped a group of people and was killed for it, and one guy helped during a store robbery.
but then there were so many stories of so many bad things.
How can people just let it happen?
I always thought that if someone was in trouble, people would help. Is this view of the world really so wrong?

Queen Crabbit 02-04-2009 10:07 PM

Jo: Say there was a situation like the girl on the bus? Would you try to help afterwards? Or in any situation where you felt you couldn't do anything at the time?

shadow-light 02-04-2009 10:10 PM

there is a famous study whree they pump smoke into a reeption room. when 1 person there they report it, 2 and they have a conversation, more than that and they all sit and stare at it, each waiting for another to react

Dreaming. 02-04-2009 10:14 PM

If I felt I could intervene safely, at no further risk to myself or anybody else (that latter bit being very important), I would like to try and intervene. And I would definitely try to help out afterwards, or at least, I'd like to think so.

What people say they'd do and what people would do are two very different things, anyway.

Queen Crabbit 02-04-2009 10:25 PM

Completely agree with that last bit :)

Rawrk 02-04-2009 10:26 PM

Oh Chels, you are. I think i'm just being stupidly DENSE.

Dreaming. 02-04-2009 10:26 PM

The Stolen One 02-04-2009 10:27 PM

i meant to watch this, but i forgot.. so i'll probably watch it on 4OD in a bit/tomorrow >.<

gypsyroselee 02-04-2009 10:37 PM

in my experience, noone ever does anything to help. :/

Rawrk 03-04-2009 12:04 AM

Watching it now.
If it wasn't a stupid risk to my life, I'd try and help.

On holiday I told a group to stop picking on this little kid and they backed off, the little kid hugged me & I asked him if he wanted me to take him to his parents and he said yes please. So I did. The group came back and tried to start on me but I told them to **** off and they did.

I'm nice? >_>

Rawrk 03-04-2009 12:08 AM

Oh my god.
I would have helped that girl on the bus.
For f*cks sake, what is wrong with people?
