Chlorpromazine?
 

I've had anxiety and depression for a long time.....pressing 13 years now... yadda yadda yadda.

My current dose is 30mg of Mirtazapine but my anxiety has got really bad and they have prescribed 25mg Chlorpromazine tablets to take along side the mirtazapine. I'm in a bit of a state at the moment.

The doctor said they will make me drowsy to start with, but how is other peoples experiences with them? Do they actually work?

I've only taken chlorpromazine once as PRN, it made me tired. I don't know what it's like taking it daily.

Oh, but be careful in the summer. The chlorpromazine will make you burn really really easily.

I take chlorpromazine, well it's PRN now but it used to be regular. I've found it really useful. Sometimes it does make me drowsy but what I find useful is that, unlike benzo's, I just feel calmer rather than completely out of it and off with the fairies!

A couple of things though, be aware of feeling faint and the sunshine. I fainted the first time I took it but think I got up too quick!!

A member of the hosp at night team asked me why I wasn't on this a couple of months ago, sorry for carshing your thread but it's not a benzo?

Ive been on chlorpromazine 3 times daily or as needed for anxiety, it was brilliant stuff but Im not sure what dosage I had, I had it in brown liquid form though when I was in hospital and it tastes rank so get the tablets if you can.

when you first start taking it, be somewhere where you can easily rest and lay down since different ppl will have a different reaction to it, some may be more drousy than others.

Hope it helps, I believe its a relatively low risk for addiction if it isnt a benzo, and I have to say it works very similarly to benzos in its effects. Its one of the older antipsychotics by the way.

I'm on up to 150mg a day as PRN (just while I'm IP)
I think its pretty good as it relaxes me without turning me into a zombie

Ok. Well first day of taking it.
Woken up quite groggy and i have a king size headache, but i tend to get headaches for the first few days when i start different tablets.

It's odd. My body feels quite relaxed but inside i'm feeling quite angry. Could this be the drugs or just me?

I think other people have said it's not a Benzo... What do you mean?

Benzo means benzodiazepine, the class of drug diazepam is in.

Chlorpromazine isnt a benzodiazepine, its an antipsychotic.

I've heard they're really good for quite a number of people, but when i was put on them for anxiety i had a dosage build up in my system and was really poorly for 2 days (as in, they took 3 or so days to kick in, and when they did i was really poorly - passing out etc). I was a bit gutted as i was hoping they'd work, i probably would have continued had they not made me so poorly.

Day two of the chlorpromazine.

Last night i had the worst headache i have ever had in my life. Had to go to bed and lay in the dark. Feeling very light headed this morning, headache has died down a bit. My eyes just feel very heavy and i feel quite drowsy now.

I have to go to work in a bit :(

Anyone else get the headaches for a bit ?

Sorry to crash your thread again. Would chlorpromazine be the equivalent of my quetiapine - i have it at night and as prn to help reduce my sh/impulsiveness, etc. Is it known to help these things?

/\ From the sound of Wikipedia it is another Anti Psychotic so i would assume it is a similar drug. I to am taking Chlorpromazine at night. However, i am no pharmacist so i am only going off the internet. It does sound similar.

Quetiapine is an atypical antipsychotic used in the management of schizophrenia and bipolar disorder, and used off-label for a variety of other purposes, including insomnia and anxiety disorders.

Quetiapine has multiple side effects, some of them common, a few of them serious.

well I transferred from chlorpromazine to quetiapine cos I had been on chlorpromazine for so long and the risk of one of the side effects increases over time. Chlorpromazine and Quetiapine are both atypical anti-psychotics, but the latter is a newer one with different side effects and long term use is preferred with quetiapine in most people.

If you feel groggy and headachy, make sure your drinking enough and if it continues see your psych cos the dose may be too high. Have you been prescribed it for long term use, or short term anxiety control?

Day three and the headaches have gone. I'm feeling sleepy but only towards the evening as opposed to all day. Though i have developed a very strange dotted affect on my skin on the crease of my arm. Its rather odd. Doesn't itch or anything.

Chlorpromazine can cause skin rashes. Can you see the pharmasist or call NHS direct for advice at some point today?

Photosensitivty caused by this med can produce a rash, and I believe the dose would need to be altered if this was the case.
