Children's websites and moderators.

Could this affect RYL?

Quote:

Organisations with interactive websites likely to be used mainly by children must ensure that staff moderating the sites are not barred from working with children from October. It will be a criminal offence for an organisation to knowingly employ a barred person for a regulated role, such as moderating children’s sites.

Organisations will have to decide whether any of their activity falls within the boundaries of the new law. If it does they will need to register staff with Government body the Independent Safeguarding Authority (ISA), which will check if those people are on either list.

Tbh, it wouldn't be a bad thing if all mods had a crb check. know it's a mission to sort out etc, and costs money, but yeah.

griddlebone 13-02-2009 04:30 PM

I have one ^_^

The Hierophant 13-02-2009 05:14 PM

I'm not a mod but I've had like 3 crb checks?

Zeitgeist 13-02-2009 05:38 PM

I had to google that. Considering how international RYL is, I imagine that'd be hard to put into effect!

Though from the wording in that quote... I should hope RYL is NOT a site "used mainly by children". Depends on the definition. What about teens? :P

one was done at my request by a mental health professional to see if my detained times came up.

& then a company did one & i had a copy & lost it, so when i went to a new job they had to do it all over again.

From what I was reading on Google, it also applies to websites working with "vulnerable groups" ie the mentally ill. It might very well apply to RYL then, but it looks like it's one of those fluffy laws that have absolutely no enforcibility. For example, the organizations must decide if the law applies to them since there is really no active "watchdog" for it, and law enforcement will only get involved if a complaint is made by a user stating that there is good reason to worry that there is someone who shouldn't be working with children/vulnerable groups moderating.

Our site owner and mods all seem rather competent, and I don't think any of us has reason to suspect they shouldn't be on here. =)

ive had about 3 too u have to get a new one each time u go for a new job

griddlebone 13-02-2009 07:14 PM

Do you have to apply for a new one with each job or does your work place do it?

random.swirls 14-02-2009 01:03 AM

Some work places pay for it.

But I worked in the same company but had different jobs and different contracts and each time I needed a new CRB check!

Rodolphus 14-02-2009 01:04 AM

Are RYL moderators counted as 'employed'?

griddlebone 14-02-2009 01:06 AM

well we dont get paid etc,so no?

random.swirls 14-02-2009 01:07 AM

I wouldn't say I was employed

I guess I would say that technically I was a volunteer

So then...you wouldn't need to get the checks and stuff?
Because you're volunteers?

It would make no difference whether a person was a paid employee or volunteer, a CRB check would still need to be done.
