There are two types of scars that are the result of the body overproducing collagen, which causes the scar to be raised above the surrounding skin.

Hypertrophic scars take the form of a red raised lump on the skin, but do not grow beyond the boundaries of the original wound, and they often improve in appearance after a few years.

Keloid scars are defined as an abnormal scar that grows beyond the boundary of the original site of a skin injury. It is a raised and ill defined growth of skin in the area of damaged skin.

Any wound no matter how big or small can form as a keloid or hypertrophic. It is possible that if the wound was stitched there might have been a smaller scar, however, this is not gauranteed.

It might be worth speaking to your GP regarding such scars as they may be able to advise on treatments for them

Take care
Kim

I have several nasty keloid and hypertrophic scars myself, even with cuts that had stitches... stitches don't necessarily prevent those types of scars from forming. I'm not sure, it may have made the scar a bit smaller, but really not much. I've also had cuts that were pretty deep and by medical standards should have been stitched, but I didn't want to go in, and they healed fine without forming too bad of a scar... so I guess it just depends on your body and I'm sure there's lots of other factors involved too.
