i have a question.
I was diagnosed with bordernine personality disorder. for a long time i have been having problems with food. i binge and purge a lot. when i told my mom that i may have an eating disorder, she told me that everything is included in my BPD. when someone has BPD do they also have EDs?

I'm sorry I'm not too sure.
I know that some traits of an ED are covered by BPD (like binging can be considered reckless behaviour) but I think people with BPD can also be diagnosed with an ED. |
She's partially right, I think. A fair amount of people with BPD have an eating disorder - it's actually part of the diagnostic criteria (impulsivity - eating disorders, spending binges, reckless driving, substance abuse, ect). But that doesn't mean that you have an eating disorder because you have BPD, though.

It can be part of BPD, it's quite a commonly recognised co-morbid problem in people with BPD. It might be worth bringing it up with your psych so you can get help with this :) Even if it is part of BPD, you still deserve all the help you can get for it and it doesn't make it any less severe. xxx

there is certain criteria for all disorders. having eating issues is part of the criteria for borderline personality disorder. but for a diagnosis of an ed there are other criteria such as the amount of eight lost, levels of electrolytes, and other medical things. but i would definitely talk to your counselor about these issues. although you may not have an ed by some stupid textbook definition you do not want it to get to that stage either. ((hugs))

if i ask someone if i have ED, would they diagnose me with it if they see that i have BPD?
should i talk about this to my psychiatrist that prescribes meds, to my therapist, or to a GP? probably my therapist, because its psychological too? |
You should talk about this with someone. But having a diagnosis doesn't make it any more real. And even if the doctor considers it part of the BPD, it's still an eating disorder. Being part of BDP would depend on if it started before or after the BPD, why it started, and who knows what else. But as I said before, even if they decide it's because of the borderline, it's still an eating disorder. That doesn't make it any less of a struggle.

What the others said. :)
The important thing is that you have the right support. Along with depression and post traumatic stress, I have a tendency to borderline symptoms. I also in the past have been on the borderline of anorexia too. This is part of the whole bundle of 'what I let in and what I let out' - emotionally, to do with control and low self esteem. And is something I work on with my therapist to overcome. |
