I'm reading this amazingly interesting *coughs* book for uni about decision making and the biases that we have because we use quick 'rules of thumb'. The following problem set out to explain one of these biases:

A bat and a ball together cost $1.10, the bat costs $1 more than the ball, how much does the ball cost?

Then it says, if you didn't think hard enough and said 10 cents you're unfortunately wrong, but it doesn't even say the blooming right answer!

Maybe I don't understand the American money system, but I reckon i'm just being stupid. Anyone know the answer? (not to the latter!)

okay my theory is if it costs a dollar more than the ball costing 10 cent's would mean the bat would cost $1.10 so in total costing $1.20.

Therefore I don't know the answer but if it cost 5 cents then the bat would cost $1.5 and total would be $1.10?
