How to get a job?
 

Ok, so I'm not the greatest people person. In life I want to ride my horse, live in a log cabin far, far away from civilisation with my boyfriend and two big fluffy dogs.

But I have to get a job, somewhere along the line.

I started off small - I applied for a job as a research assistant next summer for two projects (TMS & Visual Agnosia).And after help from my boyfriend on the CV, I got through to an interview (which is good, as friends who had applied were all rejected).

But the interview was a nightmare. I've never given one before. I was scared, anxious, my thoughts were flying round at a million miles, so I was saying things which didn't make sense, were disjointed. I said the wrong things, I made unfunny jokes and just, blegh. :sad: He said he would be in touch in the next few days, but I'm not exactly holding my hopes up.

Is there ever going to be any hope for people who aren't people persons, but can do work, and want to? I just want to study, write, learn, examine, hide away in a lab somewhere with some chickens and prisms (don't ask!)

Just wanted to let you know your not alone, i'm not a people's person either, i keep saying i'm going to live in the middle of knowwhere away from everyone and just have dogs for company lol, i know strange. I'm sure you will be able to get a job it's just finding the right one for you which i know can be very difficult when you find it hard being around people. Try not to worry too much about the interview i'm sure it didn't go as bad as you think.

The idea of interveiws complety scares me to death, you should be really proud of yourself for going! I'm proud of you! You could think of it this way maybe you want get the job but at least you have got the experience behind you of what a job interview is like, you know what to expect now kinda which i hope makes you feel easier about them at least you tryed! So well done!

Of course there is hope for people who aren't people persons! Don't forget that you can do this, and i have ever faith in you getting a job it might just take sometime. X

well done on getting an interview - that's great! And don't worry about the interview, chances are it went well and anyway, there's a knack to them, you'll know what sort of questions to expect next time and be able to answer them more comfortably. Jobs for non-people persons... well, I manage! and all I want to do is hide behind a desk and create well-structured plans and the odd spreadsheet (some of my spreadsheets and very odd...) and you know what? That's why my boss thinks I'm great, because he loves doing the people stuff and hates plans and spreadsheets. Now sure, I do have to be able to speak to people when necessary, but it's about my work, which I find interesting (even if they don't - their problem!). So, just follow your interests, if you do what interests you the jobs will come, and you'll enjoy doing them...

If you are in college most colleges have programs where you can set up practice interviews and the people give you tips on what you can improve on. It also gets you use to being in that kind of situation where you have to answer questions. My college has a career planning and placement office that does it. You can even have the interviews taped and go over them with someone. If your not in college there are other programs that are free that help people get jobs and do practice interview. They also help you with resumes. I don't know where you live but in the US most ISD places have programs like this.

Hun ive just started a job a month ago in care work, people know your nervous and expect that. I answered most of the questions they asked me wrong but its ok someone will take you on. Keep applying and looking for things you think you would be comfortable doing and dont worry about other things. I have had to tell my bosses about my sh and depression and they are brilliant. They were fine and told me it wont affect my position. So please try not to worry as you will find something.
