hearing static - anyone else?

As some of you know, I'm feeling really vulnerable and under a lot of stress at the moment.

I woke up this morning hearing like static in my head/ears. It really scared me, and I'm still rather shaken up by it.

It wasn't voices, it was just static.

It's eased now I'm up and busy and the light's on.

I've tried googling hearing static, but came up with nothing relevant.

I just need to know that I'm not alone with this. Please.

Heya, I get this all the time particularly if im stressed. Mine is due to tinnitus which I've had for a couple of years now. I'm not sure if this could be the case for you as it doesn't usually just 'come on suddenly'. Is it possibly you could be coming down with a cold or something?

I get something similar when I'm panicking however I find its more like a roaring in my ears which muffles other sounds, but it could be something similar.

I get this a lot but not just static, it can be buzzing, ringing and whistling noises - I don't think it's a particularly bad thing, just irritating.

Could it be Tinnitus?

Stellata 03-10-2008 11:43 AM

Hmm.
I was pondering over this on the bus to Tesco [as you do.....!] and it seemed to be that it's from internal emotional pressure connected with dissociative stuff. I'm getting in touch with all kinds of less than pleasant feelings that I had to repress for years, and there's a heap of internal conflict from Katrina. It's all very messy, and in process of being untangled. I think the static/pressure is from Katrina's torrent of anger and rage and hatred and that 'kind of thing'. I had an internal dialogue, and I feel less pressure.
On the other hand... there is general stress, anxiety, panic... and I could also have a slight chill thing going on physically.

It sounds like Tinnitus. Tinnitus can be brought on or exasperated by stress, too much caffeine, lack of sleep and other such things. The best things for it are to cut down on caffeine, get plenty of rest and keep yourself busy and distracted so that you do not focus on i.

*hugs* hope it got easier to handle.

I hear static, ringing, and buzzing/humming all the time.
I hate it. :-(

Tinnitus is also a side effect for a lot of psych meds.

Same here, I've had it from when I was a kid and had hearing tests e.t.c. but to no avail.

Actually, looking back, I've had this kind of thing since I was a child.

I get this a lot and have done for awhile. I never really thought much of it until I've had a few cases of it being quite deafening.

Misunderstood. 07-10-2008 11:16 PM

I used to try and explain something like what you described, hearing static to my psych. I said it felt like white noise or a rushing in my head, the static thing though I never knew how to describe and it frustrated me that i couldn't.
I still don't know if I've experienced the same thing as you. Have you tried explaining it to a proffessional?

Stellata 08-10-2008 09:32 AM

That's exactly how it is for me - I have had it periodically for as long as I can remember.
I've not tried explaining it to a professional - though we talk about it in therapy in the context of dissociation.

Hearing static

I have been hearing static and loud noises for a while. One thing I realized is that a lot of the static I hear is the sound of my hair. When I pull my hair back or press it down against my head, a lot of the static goes away. Then, other sounds hurt my ears.
It is part of hearing too loud, but I don't know the cause of the loud hearing is yet. I believe it results from anxiety. I've had hypersensitivity to other senses also, but am not sure why. If anyone knows more about this, please respond!
