Amy Winehouse and self harm joke voted funniest at Edinburgh festival *possible SI trigger*
 

A joke by Zoe Lyons concerning Amy Winehouse and self harm has been voted the funniest of the Edinburgh festival:

"I can't believe Amy Winehouse self harms. She's so irritating she must be able to find someone to do it for her."

What do you think about the joke and the fact that it was voted the funniest of the festival? Do you think it's right to joke about self harm? Some organisations such as 'see me' have gotten really worked up about it.

To be honest, I think the emphasis of the joke is on Amy Winehouse (and how annoying some people find her) rather than self-harm. Zoe Lyons has said that she knows self-harm is a serious topic.

I don't think it's right at all. More the abusive and bullying attitude of it, rather than the self harm side of it.

I think it's more of a dig at Amy Winehouse like people have said.
I understand why it might offend people but, all jokes can. It wasn't said in a nasty way so, I don't see a problem with it.

& if I'm honest, it made me LOL.

i read and interveiw with the girl who wrote it and she said 'self harm isnt funny, not at all. but its jsut a joke' - osmehtign along those lines. though i dotn liek the fact that, to me, its like she's kicking someone when they're down.

I agree that it's more of a joke about Amy Winehouse, rather than about self harm but although I did laugh, when you think about it, it isn't that funny.
Amy Winehouse obviously has a lot of issues and I don't suppose the joke particularly helped her and I wonder how Zoe Lyons would feel if the same joke were told about her? Or how we would feel if the joke was on us?

I think the joke is quite funny TBH. I don't take offence from it even though I'm an SH'er.

What is more worrying though is that it is pretty lame yet it is apparantly the funniest to come out of the festival....

I laughed, it's true. I wouldn't of thought it was the funniest joke there but i don't think it's offensive to self harmers. I certainly don't find it offensive.

i think it's all good. i don't think the joke is that funny, but maybe if i heard it and didn't read it off a screen it would be funny.
i think it's FINE to joke about selfharm, the same way i think it's FINE to joke about everything else, including amy winehouse.

It's not especially funny but that's solely the joke itself. I don't buy into the idea that certain things should be outside the realms of comedy.

It's quite funny actually. I always find self harm jokes funny. I never get offended.

Personally i dont find it funny and think its worrying that it was supposedly the funniest joke at the festival. It doesnt particularly offend me as I agree the dig is at Amy as opposed to self harmers in general. I do think its pretty low though and completely unoriginal. Is so easy to have a go at Amy Winehouse, so it's not like she's witty or original at all. I'm not a fan of hers but i wouldnt regard it as funny in any way but i dont feel offended.

I'm not offended by that, yet dont find it funny. If that's the funniest thing that came out of the festival, then it cant have been that good imo.

wow it must have been bad if that was the funniest joke there. I don't find it offensive to self harmers but I don't think it was very funny either.

I have to agree with Tomehboi though - i wasn't offended by it, but i didn't find it at all funny. I can understand completely how others may become upset by it though.

It simply wasn't a joke about self harm, and as such isn't offensive from that perspective.

I laughed. It's kind of funny. But it's sad that it was voted the funniest at the festival. I also think it's kind of cruel to make fun of someone who's so clearly struggling, and to make fun of them for something so clearly related to that, and to then make such a big deal over the joke.

Well I am first off a plank and secondly someone who really struggles with jokes, so when I read it first I thought it was an actual idea and I was shocked, then I realised it was an opinion and I was thinking about it, then I read it and realised it was a joke and that took me a minute to understand then I didn't find it funny but wasn't bothered by it.

Bet you're glad you know that.
