Advice on whether to take medication or not
Hey Guys, I went to the docs today and she said to think about whether I want medication for depression or not. I don't know much about it so was looking for some advice from people with some experience. Thanks xxx

It's probably something to talk to your doctor about more than others as the members on this site won't know too much about your medical history or what the doctors think.
If the doctor is recommending medication then they probably feel it will be useful to you, at least to try, to help get your depression under control. Is it caused by a chemical imbalance or are they unsure of that? |

I've taken various AD's for depression and anxiety and I've found it to be very 'trial and error'. It sometimes takes a while to get the right one and the right dosage. But when you get there, it can really help with your depression and associated symptoms. I'm still trying - just been swapped today and tailing off my current ones. I wish there was a 'magic pill' sometimes but it seems to be all about what suits you as an individual. They're also very good in conjunction with a talking therapy. Wish you well!!! xx :-D Marie |
Like somone else said it is hard to give advice when you dont know someones history . For some people antidepressants are a big help , for some its "therapy" that helps ,and for others its a bit of both . Its good that you have a gp thats allowing you to have some say in the matter tho

I would only take them if you are sure that you cannot manage the depression otherwise, i.e. psychotherapy, counselling etc.

I have had equally good and bad experiences with anti depressants. Though like somebody else said it does seem to be very much a case of trial and error on them. What works for somebody else might not necessarily work for you. Unfortunatly a great deal of patience is required for this.
I did find however, that in conjunction with therapy and counselling the drugs did take the edge off of the depressions that i was feeling. In many cases they helped me sleep at night, and i dont care what anybody says, a good nights sleep can really do wonders for the way that you are feeling. If you think you can cope with counselling then by all means continue on this route. If you think that taking some anti depressants might help take the edge off a little bit than try this as well. Make sure you talk to your doctor. Discuss any concerns you might have, and ask them to answer your questions. If you are close to your parents and friends get their opinion as well, make sure you have a firm support network during this time. Most of all, be kind to yourself. x |
If you aren't doing therapy currently, I would probably start with that before taking any medication. If you feel that you are not improving in therapy as fast as expected then I would probably look in to medication.
But as everyone said, this is something to discuss with your doctor. I have had decent experiences with medication. But it does require patience while you and your doctor figure out the right medication combination for you. |
