Freshers week - Uni...ahhh!!

Anyone going to uni in Sept? I'm dreading freshers week, I don't want to go. I've got social anxiety so even attending uni is bad enough but I don't think I can cope with this "freshers week" stuff.

Anyone been to one? Did you avoid it? Did you go? what was it like?

I really don't want to go to it, but then, if I don't, I'll be even more anxious than usual in normal classes after it because everyone will know each other :ermm:

I don't make things easy for myself, do I? :-D

You don't have to go to freshers week to be honest. It's just set up so that students can have a good time with people who they'll be with at uni to make friends with etc. =)

I avoided most of it, and did some quiet things with friends. I had the advantage of going to a small teacher training college, so it was all pretty low key.
And for my 2nd year we were at Hull Uni, and we were basically 2nd years, so Freshers Week was passe by then!

yeah i didn't go either. stuff that, lol. people won't know each other just from freshers week, for a start most people spend that week drunk so wouldn't even recognise people they meet during it.

If I actually get into a uni I might go. But not on my own, I'd go with some friends.

You don't have to go, like it's already been said it's a good place to pick up free pens etc (I got given a pineapple and a pot noodle amongst other things), but it's not the best place to make friends. If you don't feel comfortable going then just try getting to know people in your seminar groups or in your accommodation. Don't worry lots of people will be in the same boat as you. Just try and enjoy yourself and relax. Good luck x

What I don't understand is, who do you go to freshers week WITH? If you don't know anyone, what do you do?

But yeah, I have really bad anxiety too and i'm dreading it. *sighs*

I only attended one event at my Fresher's week which was a pink party, the rest I missed.

It can be generally good fun though.

Aye, i'm dreading it.
All the events organised seemed to be club nights.
I don't go out... :(

If I get into a uni, I might also go...but I sort of feel I might be the only 21 year old out of a bunch of 18 year olds, which DOESN'T appeal.
No offence you 18 year olds.

Alas, I am quite into partying, and my brother seemed to enjoy it when he went, and he was around my age also.
Why does education take so long? I'm actually considering doing another 3 years!

I didn't go to many college parties in my 6th form (when I say many, I got dragged to one and I actually loved it) so with me, the idea of freshers especially because of the college I go to, scared me to death. Though, I got the info about what they were doing and I forced myself to pay for the tickets and ended up going to I think 6 out of the 8 nights. Some o them I preferred more than others but it is something that it is worth going to even if you just go once. The way how it works at our college is a bit different as we are a relatively small place rather than a larger uni but I did like the experience. It did help however that I got to my accomodation a week early and went out with them before freshers so we had slowly increasing numbers of people each day so I got used to it. I'm not going to lie, some bits scared me to death but some were great; there is one party in particular that the WHOLE of the five years of students at my college go to (with the exception of people that can't get/ the few that don't want to) and I'm planning on going there in October again even though it is an event I thought 3 years ago that I would never dream of going to it is actually great so yeah, it might surprise you but don't do anything you don't feel comfortable with and see what's happening and if you want to go; like we had a comedy night so it's not all about clubbing (the 2 clubbing ones are the ones I missed).

I went to all the freshers events at my uni and to be honest if I hadn't gone I wouldn't have become friends with the people I have. 3 of these friends I'm going to be sharing a house with in a few weeks.

I didn't know anyone in my halls that didn't go to at least some of the events but then most people at my uni are party animals. Lol.

If you don't want to go out at night, make sure you go along to the Freshers Fair with all the freebies and the sports clubs/societies where you can sign up. Last year I got loads of free entry stuff into clubs and free drinks but then again I love going out with my friends.

As long as you talk to people in your halls/house or on your course I don't think you'll be short of friends really.

To be honest, you make most of your friends during lectures. If you can find someone during freshers' in the same class as you then great, but don't worry about it. Hardly anyone knows anyone else when they start so you just need to start talking to folk. I know it's hard, but it can be done.

I don't even know what freshers week is. I really don't know anything about uni, do I? Now I'm even more scared of September. :(

That's the difference between our uni and most I suppose. Almost everyone I know at uni is on the same course as me as we are very much in the majority in a small college and it is pretty social as are all courses of it's nature in the UK/ Ireland so we kind of met through freshers. Though, if you don't go to Freshers then you do meet up with people in lectures or if you join any societies and clubs. I know we are split up into smaller practical groups so we meet people through those and because we HAVE to work together to succeed in aspects of our course we do meet people in them so it isn't all about going to Freshers.

Freshers is the first week or so of uni in the UK. It basically has a lot of parties for the new students and a Freshers Fare which is where you go to see what is available at your uni and to join societies (and of course get free stuff)

I didn't really take part in freshers week. I meet a really good friend at registration and since then i've made loads more friends in lectures and stuff like that. Everyone is new so you'll meet people.
