uni applications, declaring stuff...
there's a bit on ucas form for declaring illnesses and stuff, including mental things
is it true that if i go to the doctor about my self harm + possible depression, it will have to go on my ucas form, and then the unis i'm applying to will know? will this affect my getting an offer? panic! not terribly urgent, but a worry nonetheless... |
I suppose it kinda depends on the course you are taking, the unis will only want to know so that they can perhaps provide some kind of support for you. Depression is not going to deter unis from wanting you there and self harm, unless you present a complete risk to yourself or others then it is not going to effect you. I had to declare about mental health issues because of applying to do mental health nursing, there is quite an occupational health check before you get onto the course. Hope this has answered a little.
p.s. usually it will only be occupational health that get to know about the health issues not the actual uni as far as I know xx |
thankyou
i've just been a little panicky about uni-related things recently i guess wanting to do english, it isnt going to matter too much? i'm a bit less stressed about this now, thanks |
Please don't worry at all :-) Going to uni is like a major step forward for anyone, universities want you to succeed and they are looking for people to put on their course rather than turning people away. Good luck xx

It won't make any difference at all. Once at university it might be a good idea to tell your personal tutor about your depression just so they know. Universities are generally very understanding about this sort of thing and will help you out however they can.
|
i gto told this by our UCAS type teahcer person, and there is also a bit about how supportive you're family are. they can thold it agaitn syou or its discrimination, i thin the only time they can is with becomign a nurse/doctor, then you have to be 2 years mental health free.
fair to say though, i paniced whne she said that too. |
I'm ****ed then. I don't think I will go to the doctors...
|
you shouldnt need to put it down at all. ive suffered with depression and SH for about 8 years now. i never put it on my ucas form at all...and dont remember it being on there, maybe its new? i dunno. but it shouldnt affect your course at all. if you feel confident enough to put it, thats fine. im guessing if you do put it on, your tutors at uni will be made aware of it, and will probably talk to you about it and offer you extra support should you need it. but as i said, i never put it on and ive just graduated from uni!
hope your application goes well JinX XxX |
yeah....i lied....but that's cos my dad was checking my form and my parents don't know anything about me lol.
legally, they cannot discriminate against you. morally, i actually don't think it will make a difference, the awareness and attitude towards mental illness is improving these days, universities are a lot more accepting and willing to help if you ask for it. i wouldn't worry if i were you - it shouldn't affect anything, if anything it may help cos they could suggest people who can help you whilst at uni if you need it. |
I've applied through UCAS 3 times and at no point have had to mention mental illnesses or anything like that. The only time I had to was when I got through the interview for nursing, and had to go to occupational health. But apart from that, there's been no mention.

omg i hope there isnt a ilness section on UCAS
i have to do all of mine tomorrow because i avoided it for so long that my unwillingness for wanting to even look that far into the future means im disadvantgaing myself - so im being forced to do it with my tutor he knows i SI - so it would be hard to lie - and though i havent been to the doctors - he got a letter from my councellor expalining about my SI and suicide thoguhts - so i dont really know where that really stands i would love to just lie - but knwoing my luck it would back fire i hope to god theres no illnes section - and i can skip it!!! i dont think they should realy go asking that if its irrelavant to what your doing and unlikely to affect you in what your doing grr now angry at UCAS and scared of tutor tomorrow :( but this was a good thread - i've been warned ofwhat lays ahead :) |
i applied this year and i didnt have to put anything down about depression or anything. however my head of sixth form knew i had been admitted to hospital and so he had to mention that on my reference from him, but it made no difference and the uni has accepted me
like everyones said usually it doesnt matter..accept for a few courses like social work i think |
Hi, I've just finished my second year of med school. I was worried when I was applying about whether I should tell anyone, its on my medical records but the uni were only interested in which vaccinations I had had and any disabilities.
I agree that you should tell someone like your personal tutor when you are there to make sure you have some support if you need it. |
Don't worry about it. Even if you go to the doc you don't need to tell UCAS, so don't let the fear of that put you off going to the doc to get help. I filled out mine a few months ago but don't remember anything about mental health. I know for nursing I had to cuz it's not through UCAS up here, its through a company called CATCH, and after the occupational health, when they were satisfied it was controlled (hidden, not controlled atch) then they were happy enough.
