What makes a man a man?
 

Im 37, im male but i havent got a clue if im a man? I mean im not sure what being a man is or means? Im not all rugged. Im not tough. I cry far too much at films and music and anything really. Im sensitive. I dont play football and drink till i spew in my mates back pocket. I like cooking and the finer things in life. I like shopping and design and many of the things people stereotypically associate as being feminine. (im straight btw so im not questioning my sexuality)

I prefer the company of women to men in a social aspect. I dont actually like half of my species. Im rather ashamed of the things they do sometimes.

Im still scared of things. I dont feel 37. I dont feel like im grown up. I feel like a kid still i think. I dont feel like a man. But then i dont know what one is.

I know most of the replies will come from women so i would like to know what you think makes a man a man.

seriously it is just that simple a man is a male human over the age of approx 16/18 who has emerged from puberty... thats all

however if you were asking what makes a man in my eyes.... well thats something quite different altogether... however what I look for in a "man" is quite different from the next person to post on here and the next and on and on.... if we all looked for the same thing then there would a handful of very happy men and a world full of inbreds.... so humans would die out pretty fast.

Sorry i think i made this sound like i need help being a man or something.

I was watching a comedian and he was doing an impression of some guy shouting "be a man!" and it got me to thinking what is a man.

So i wanted to put the question out there cus i guess my idea is that i should be more like my dad perhaps.

So yes Alchy you are right. I want to know what peoples ideas of what makes a man. And no, not what they look for in a man.

I just wouldnt really put myself in the "man" category i guess. Meh stupid post i shouldnt have started it

What makes a man is...well...entirely unique to each individual. They can be sensitive, insensitive, bad, good, etc etc etc.

Me and my chemistry teacher were talking about the difference between men and women the other day and we've come to the conclusion that men are like dogs, and women are like cats (bear with me here..)
When you annoy a dog, it might bark a bit but then it'll generally just wander off and then forget all about it- you're still its best friend. Women are different, the cat will hiss at you and be guarded around you for a while. The cat will remember that you annoyed you! I'm not saying all men and women are like this at all- but its quite a good analogy.

Men and women are just different. The emotions are different and phisically we're different. But thats cool :)

In a way I'm like you. I'm quiet and reserved. My closest friends are all female and I feel more comfortable around girls. I'm not overly into sports such as football or rugby. I'm not misogynistic and while I drink beer, I don't drink to the point of being totally intoxicated.

Whether I'm a man is probably a different issue to yours as being 18, there's still some boy/man transition going on but overall I'd class myself as a man.

To me, though, a man is simply a male human. What makes you a man is that little bit missing from your chromosomes that makes XX into XY. Masculinity is not the same as manliness in my mind. You don't have to be macho to be a man.

You may not fit that macho stereotype because you are caring and sensitive and that lager swilling, woman chasing, arrogant, yobbish stereotype simply isn't you. Your personality and what makes you you on an individual level is simply that - your personality. To me, being a man is something far less specific than what activities you partake in, what interests you have or what company you keep. Such individual aspects of your personality help to define you as a person but you as a man is already decided by virtue of biological structure. You are no more or less a man than anyone else with an XY chromosome.

Being a man is being an adult. It is accepting who you are without worrying about who you should be.

Ha Rob me shy and retiring? Erm you do realise you spent a day in my company right? I did play alot of sport actually. Golf, fencing and squash. I can drink till i pass out and oh boy do i love ladies and their....well........as the Black Eyed peas would put it - lady lumps :P.

Apart from the winky, to me you're only a man if you feel like a man, I still think of myself as a boy (am still a sweet innocent child honest, 28 going on 14). In apearance I'd call someone a man, if he was in a suit, as in a buisness man, or maybe all manly n rugged, thinking of the steriotype, oh and the elderly would be men too.

So in the descriptive sense any male can be a man once they pass that age they stop being a boy (18/21) but in the labeling yourself way of calling yourself a man well only you can apply a label to yourself.

You've got the bits (I assume), you're over the age, so if you want to be a man then you are one
