A Discussion regarding Vets
Hi everyone,
Just recently there was an incident with a thread, being the "Sex as a form of SI" thread. Under the current guidelines a thread of that nature, though it was purely for discussion purposes, had to be moved to Veterans Support. However, I noticed that there were some vets unhappy with that decision. Therefore, I would like to open it up for discussion with you all. Basically, should the guidelines be altered to allow threads of a possibly triggering yet unsupportive nature, such as the aforementioned thread, to remain in chat or should to guidelines stay as they are, keeping all threads of a triggering nature, no matter what the intent, in Veterans Support? Kind Regards, Erin |
just my opinion, but it IS a sensitive subject and it may help a member , who has never told before, to open up; first on here, then in RL.
I think the support end is the fact of learning they are NOT the only one, nor is it their fault sexual abuse happened. And usng sex as abuse, to find out how many ppl there are who have done the same will be a comfort in itself. I feel it should be left in vets support...isnt that what 'support' is deemed to be? For those who get triggered by such threads...AVOID THEM. We can't possible make everyone happy but i think this comes the closest. Just my opinion romp |
So... I'm confused...
I thought we were allowed to post outside of Vets. Are we not? |
I think, with the thread mentioned, that, maybe it should have been allowed to stay in general. It wasn't asking for support as such, and was merely for general discussion around the topic.
If people aren't wanting to read triggering posts, as long as the title has a warning, then they don't have to go in and read it, just like with posts anywhere else. So yeah, I think it should have been allowed to stay in general. |
I think topics that do not require support, but could be triggering should be allowed to stay in general as long as they are labelled with such a warning...
Also, if deemed appropreiate they can be moved to support... thats why we have you to look after us Erin! *Mwah*!! xxx |
I vote for this: Topics of a triggering nature that are for discussion and not support should be allowed in General
as long as they are labelled triggering so we don't have to read it if we don't want it. |
I AM STILL CONFUSED... are vets not allowed to post on other parts of RYL???
***edit... OHHH... we are talking about VETS General (right?) |
Vets are allowed to post anywhere on RYL they want. What Erin is asking has to do with just Vets general and Vets support and what types of threads should go where within those 2 forums.
|
MM! Thats one for thought! Whats your views on the situation Erin?
|
I am here to serve :p
In all honesty, it is more important to me to make everyone happy. Of course I would INSIST that all threads were labeled correctly and I know if they needed a label that you guys would be more then happy to post report it *hint hint* I do have an opinion, but I wish to hear what other people think. And please, if you can, explain why you chose what you did. I really want to get an indepth understanding of where everyone stands on the issue. Thanks guy xox |
I think it's ok to put discussion posts in general, as long as they're labelled as being triggering. Personally I see the support forum as being precisely that - somewhere you post when you need some support/reassurance etc
|
I think that they should be allowed in General, yes.
Perhaps (like we have in the Common Room) there could be a label added for "Possibly triggering discussion" or something? The reason for this being that a discussion "using sex as a form of SI" isn't (in my opinion) triggering in the normal context. If that makes sense. But I can see how it would trigger people, and also debates/discussions like that often go off on a bit of a tangent and then come back, and then go off again. It's what makes the discussions interesting. I apologise if that makes no sense, I only just got up :-p |
i agree that discussions/debates should be left in general whether triggering or not. if the poster is NOT looking for support then i say it goes in general and if its triggering....give it a warning.

We have a really good discussion going here, keep it up Vetties :)
|
I think it belongs in support. To me, vets general is a place for fun or interesting stuff. Vets support is where we should put serious things, whether or not they are asking for support.
|
I'm a duffus. I clickey clicked the wrong box. I'm happy for things like that to be in general as long as they are labelled correctly. If people are posting then they should use their own discression and think about which part of vets it is most suitable for x
|
The reason I think it should be allowed to stay in general is that it would be threads that didn't require any actual support from anyone..i assume... like the discussion you mentioned Erin.
& as long as its labelled correctly...people can tell if they are in a place to enter in to the discussion & read the post & if not they can choose to stay away... I understand the need for vets general & vets support, I think its great to have the seperation, but for discussion/question related thingys there should be able to be a cross over... You don't have to read all the threads. I'm rambling now... shutting up... |

Forgive me, I can be a real duffus sometimes. |
I think that as long as it's labelled correctly and it's purely for discussion, it should be allowed in VG
|
I think the very name "Veterans Support" means that people only generally post in there to ask for support/support others. People don't usually go into support to debate things and any debate threads posted there are unlikely to have as high a reply rate.
I thought that the whole idea of the label system was to identify in a clear and obvious manner threads that are likely to contain triggering material. Therefore, if such debate or discussion threads containing triggering content were correctly labelled, we're all adults here and we should know to give them a wide berth if we aren't feeling so good. |
