coursework.. word limits??

hi guuyys (:
im always posting questions.. :D
this time.. im a bit worried about my AS english lit courswork..
ive kinda gone waay over the word count..
my teacher pointed that out to me, and then immediately added ‘oh, but its too late to do anything now.’
GRRR.
so i was wondering,, how greatly will this affect the mark??
what happens…??
do they cut off the over the limit words at the end of your essay?????
one of my friends said they do ):
or do they just like,, say that you cant make your work concise,, and mark you down???
ahhww.. im scared ):

In the uni i went to you where aloud to be 10% over.
Failing that you got marked down by 20% for being over.

I want to know how you went over? Is there a trick? because i must have written a hundred essays and i struggle to hit the word count!!! I HATE essays.

Anyway, I think it depends how much you went over by. I wouldn't worry if its not too much. I think for my english coursework 2 years a go it was 1800 words and we could go 200 words either way.

What was the word limit and how far did you exceed it? What level are you doing it for?

Bleeding Angel 24-04-2008 08:28 PM

usaully for uni you are allowed 10% over and under

Aphelion 24-04-2008 08:49 PM

I don't know about English, but for my coursework in Chemistry they mark up to the word count. Anything beyond isn't even looked at. It may be different for you, I don't know..

explorer-luce 24-04-2008 09:03 PM

AS english lit for us is 1500 limit. My coursework is 2000 and it's okay, according to my teacher...

Just write it and then you can refine it once it's finished.

biffytheclyro 24-04-2008 09:40 PM

word limit was 2500..
i went like 800 over :/
thats really really bad ):
and.. the final draft has been handed in with the actual word count at the bottom...
oh gosh.. i think im screwed )':

i shouldn't think it would be too much of a problem, i'm only sitting English Language because I'm doing it a year early but they basically told us that for A/S it doesnt matter

mesmerized. 24-04-2008 10:18 PM

Well, I'm in Scotland doing Advanced Highers, so it's different. But for my History dissertation, if you go one word over the limit, you lose 20%, for the others you can go 10% over without losing marks.

If you really want to know, the exam board website will probably tell you. But if you can't do anything about it now, it's not really worth worrying about.

x-dying-inside-x 24-04-2008 10:29 PM

im always over word limit.

Trucktastic 24-04-2008 11:47 PM

I was always over the word limit too, got a bit panicked over one that was more than 10%, and they ignored it! But normally up to 10% over is okay. You're a bit over that, but like Mesmerized said - it's in, you can't do much about it now, so concentrate on something else. I'm hoping your qualification won't rest on a word count.

Take care

they probably won't bother reading the last bit then.
i hope it wasn't too good.

BeautyFiend 25-04-2008 12:03 AM

I've never stated a word count in an essay ever.

I doubt it will be THAT big a problem. My mate went well over teh word count and it was fine.... as long as its not waffle, it should be okay

Depends on the examiner, really

Bruise Pristine 26-04-2008 06:01 PM

Don't worry, it shouldn't matter for English. I was about 500 words over in my AS English Literature coursework and got full UMS marks. I was a few hundred over in AS English Language coursework and got 86/90.

I'm about 1500 words over this year on my English Language investigation, and 1000 words over on my Literature coursework. oops.

exactly. You will lose marks if you've just repeated yourself by going so much over. But if it's all relevant then you'll be fine.

purexcocaine 26-04-2008 06:23 PM

ooh i do AS english lit too.
basically they stop reading at the point you went over.
however i think it's all lie really, because they're not going to sit there and count every word, because they're lazy.
if they weren't you wouldn't need to put a word count down.
plus i went over on my sociology coursework, and it was me that noticed it on my second draft.
none of my teachers picked up on it.
and basically i lied about the work count on my sociology coursework.

ANYWAY it won't affect your grade too much, if at all.

Sans Peur 26-04-2008 06:31 PM

On my uni course which i know is different than AS stuff but my tutor told me that if he thinks it is too short or too long that he will sit there and count the words.I am unsure if it is the same kinda thing for AS

sorry pointless reply
