worried because my tongue is numb (dentist)...update

Hi first aid team,
I know you are really great and because of that I'd like to explain a health problem that is worrying me since some days  .
I don't ask for an explanation or much information because I am afraid that this would make me worrying even more :crying: .
But perhaps you can say if you think that it will get away and calm me a bit?

I will now try to explain you what happened and what my problem is now.

I was at the dentist's last Thursday (April 17th) and he fixed one teeth.
Before that, he gave me an anaesthetization. It seemed to be too little anaesthetization because I could still feel too much.
So, he decided to give my another analgesic and said that it must not tickle in my tongue when he gave the injection...but it did.
But the tickeling was not that bad, so I decided to not say anything (because I was in a hurry anyway :eyeroll: ).

The part of my tongue is still (!) kind of numb after almost six (!) days and I am sooo afraid that it is kind of "broken" :crying: . What if the injection hurt a nerve? Will my tongue ever be O.K. again?
It has been getting better and better each day but the numbness is still a little bit there and it is annoying because it feels strange whenever I talk or even when my tongue touches my teeth  .

I will have to go to my dentist in some hours anyway and then, I will tell him about my problem but I'd like to know if you think that my tongue will fully recover.
I asked my aunt who was a dentist's assistant (or dentist's nurse...don't know what you call them) and she said it is strange that the numbness is still not gone away 100% .

Thanks a lot,
Judith

P.S.: I have had sooo many really extremely bad health problems and have been inpatient at least 1/10 of my life and I still cannot understand why such a thing like a numb tongue is frightening that much.

It's probably fightening you becuase it's something you're not used to and you don't know why it's like it. He probably did hit a nerve, by the sounds of what he said to you it is a relatively common problem/ risk and it would have been better to tell him at the time. It getting better is a good sign and one which makes me think it will recover. It's possible that he slightly damaged the area around the nerve which provides sensation to your tongue. There are several branches of this nerve through your face/ near your teeth. If the area has become swollen around the nerve it will reduce it's function. It is possible now that as it is starting to feel due to any swelling around the nerve reducing pressure on it and so allowing it to regain feeling/ stop tingling. But this may not be totally accurate so don't quote me on it!

Thanks Kim for your answer! I read it yesterday morning before I had went to the dentist and it calmed me.

So, now I'd like to write a little update.

The numbness has gone a bit more away but it is still there but not as annoying as before. Because it gets better and better each day, I hope that it will be totally go away soon.
By the way, there isn't any swelling and I guess that is a good sign.

So, I told the dentist about the numbness and he said that it probably will go away soon. (Vitamin B could help to recover sooner?!)
But well, I was not totally honest :crying: .
He asked me if it felt like there was something short- circuited (?) in my tongue or if it felt like taking a battery into my mouth (hello?! how should I know how that would feel :-D ?!) because then, I should have said something while he gave me the anaestethic.
Well, it tickled a lot and it felt really strange when he did it but I was in a hurry and thought "this is not that bad, so don't tell anything" :nono: .
But I did not dare to tell him about the tickling yesterday because I know that I should have mention it while it happened (stupid me!) :crying: .

So, what if there is really something gone wrong while the injection?
But well, it is getting better and better, so I hope my tongue will fully recover soon.

Well, that are the latest news about that.

Oh, a little warning: Please don't do what I have done because health should be more important than being in a hurry because of another appointment  .
You see, that it could have some negative effects to stay quiet and think "it is not bad enough to say something".

(Yeah, and today I felt like sh*t after the treatment because my circulatory went crazy afterwards. It was very bad but some hours rest and at least my circulatory recovered.)

Thanks,
Judith

This same thing just happened to my boyfriend!
he got his wisdom teeth pulled, but they were all mostly out so he just got freezing, with the needles, same as you. and for some reason (i don't know why) he touch the needle with his tounge and 1/2 of it was like still frozen, numb like you said, he also said he couldn't taste anything on that 1/2. He got the teeth pulled on, uhm... wednesday and he said still it dosen't feel completely back to normal but it has gotten alot better.
just thought i'd let you know you arn't completely alone.

It should hopefully be better soon especially as the dentist said it wouldn't last much longer and it is still improving. Vit B12 may help

Luckily, my tongue feels quite normally since today. Two days ago it was sooo bad and I thought it won't ever get better.

daisy*, I hope that your boyfriend will feel better soon again, too. As far as I heard it can happen that sometimes your tongue will feel numb for a few days but then, it should go away.

Hi Animad, my dentist prescribed vitamine B12 complex to me on Friday.
But I am not sure if I will need it now because my tongue start to get better on its own.
But taking a few vitamines might be good though, so it can fully recover, isn't it?

Thanks to you!
