hello :) how's everybody going? i'm putting off reading a book that i need to by tomorrow. i'm wondering if perhaps anybody knows anything about jean paul sartres existentialism & humanism? maybe if they do, they could do a quick summary before eastenders?

i also need big advice. reading or save the money to do something responsible with the money?

i haven't been around these parts in months. things have changed.

i don't know anything about philosophy so i'm no help there.
and i don't know what you should do with the money. i quite like the reading lineup, so i guess you should do that.

ahh can't stay away forever. just felt like seeing what was going on and stuff. i want to be responsible. but equally i want to go out and get really drunk and dance to slipknot in a terrible fashion. my dilema is the boyfriend wants to go away, so really i should use reading moneys on that. oh nooooooo.

ah man. this philosophy getting me down. too many long words, too little time.

descartes. oh man. i could do him, a little bit anyway. like the meditations and his candle and malicious demon thing. this sartre bloke gets me banging my head up against a wall. his wife was amazing though, simone de beauvoir. pure femenist philosopher. loved the free-love kinda relationship haha.

i would but he's quite, well, very shy you see, very anti drugs. so i'm not sure how he'd react around a few of my friends who like to induldge in less legal activity. ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh.

dirty wkend away/reading. this decision is torturous.

I know the TINIEST bit about Sartre and existentialism through Sociology (currently revising for my second year uni exams) but hmm. I'm not very good at it?

I recognise your name i think. I know NOTHING about philosophy sorry. It was one of my module options but i chose to do a crime module instead. sorry. Good luck with it though!

Just don't look at them. Life's a whole lot easier that way.

These are the three main concerns that Satre identifies as central to existentialism:
-the 1st concern is with the individual human being, not general ideas about humanity. It is an individual's uniqueness that makes him important.
- 2nd is with the meaning of human lives, not scientific truths about the world. Satre is saying that subjective experience is always regarded as more important than objective truth.
- the 3rd concern is with the freedom of individuals. For Satre, every person has the ability to, and must, choose his or her own attitudes, purpose and lifestyle.
Satre maintained the only authentic way of life is that which is freely chosen by each individual him or herself.

Satre claimed that the very idea of god was self contradictory. He moves on to consider the consequences of living in a world without God. He does not dismiss the God notion. He states that god's non existence is fact that must confront us all in our lives, as the atheist has a profoundly different view of human existence from the theist.
The only basis for morality is human freedom. He rejected the term 'human nature', as it is too general.

Goodness me, there is a lot in this book. Yes I am this bored. Is any of that relevant?

Hi there! I'm a philosophy/ethics student. If you're looking for a good explanation, I recommend Six Existentialist Thinkers by H J Blackham. Good overview of the main proponents.

Existentialism goes into the bucket of pfilosophical theories that I don't like :tongue2:

Ask for a different book.
Sartre is a joke and existentialism is crap philosophy.
