Online dating sites

What does everyone think about online dating websites?
I'm feeling a bit lonely and haven had a date in a loooooong time and my friends keep telling me I should join a dating site. I've always thought it was a bit weird and I wouldn't find anyone decent on there, but what do you guys think? I think maybe it's more common these days than i realise? Or is it a bit sad?
Discuss!

purexcocaine 09-03-2008 05:06 PM

i think it is waaaay more common than before.
i've never used them,
so i can be of no help.
but yeahh, i do find them a bit weird but they help some people.
worth a try, if you really want.

griddlebone 09-03-2008 05:11 PM

i belong to one :)

i dont care if its percieved as sad to be honest!

linder surprise 09-03-2008 05:12 PM

ohhh. i don't think it's a good ideaaa, tbh.
i just think it's like selling yourself on a plate for everyone to see. i personally would never do it.
i think you'd have more luck just going out to bars or clubs or whatever, or meeting friends of friends (it's always friends of friends, isn't it?) for trying to hook up/date people.

I wouldn't be caught dead on a dating site - seems desperate to me. I can't imagine being so desperate that I go to a site loaded with other desperate people - and worse. Maybe you can change you social scene. Volunteer for something along your interests and meet like minded people while doing something other than lurking in dark corners of pubs and clubs.

x-dying-inside-x 09-03-2008 05:31 PM

ive never been on one and i dont think i would ever use one.
you dont even know if these people are what they say they are.

Aphelion 09-03-2008 06:11 PM

I find it kind of creepy to be honest. Might just be a stereotype we've been brainwashed into having but any person seeking a partner through the internet makes me think they're 48 yr old beer-belly unwashed balding perves who have this one opportunity to fake who they are because, well, how well can you really know a person sitting behing a screen?

charcoal feathers 09-03-2008 06:36 PM

I've never actually been on a dating site myself, but i don't really see a problem with it.
It's not really that much of a difference to meeting someone in a club, they could still be some sleeze who's not nice at all, who could be potentially dangerous. They could quite easily put on a front, get you a lone and yeah.
There is prolly loads of genuine nice people on them, give it a go.

xXMessedUpXx 09-03-2008 06:45 PM

I've signed up to loads before but it never lead anywhere, not to mention the majority of guys were twice my age and half weren't even living in the UK.

I kind of made myself make more of an effort to go out, and for once i wasn't thinking about it, which was when i met my current bf. These things happen when you least expect it.

Though if its more that you're just looking for company then it might be good for that?

TruConfessions 09-03-2008 06:58 PM

I've used them in the past.

sopranonut 09-03-2008 07:29 PM

Thanks for the advice. I'm just really shy and find it hard to find people in real life.
I'm also just coming out as a lesbian and don't really know how to meet girls, and i want to meet someone for a relationship and think that if you meet people in clubs it's usually more for a one night stand then anything serious. But maybe i'm wrong about that?

charcoal feathers 09-03-2008 07:30 PM

Ha, i think that too.
Most guys/girls out are just looking for sex rather then a relationship.
Although, not everyone. My sister met her guy on a night out and they've been together for like 5years or something now.

Yay! Sounds like fun! :-D;-)

I don't think i'm gonna go for the dating site just yet, plus if you want them to work you have to PAY like loads! Think I just need to get out more!

Mm hmm.
RYL is not a dating site - I'm just going to get that out of the way.

Personally, I wouldn't use a dating site. I don't see anything wrong with it, though. But, I'm not interested in finding people anyway, being a social outcast 'n all.

Plus these sites cost moneeeeyyys. And that's money you could spend at the pub meeting someone local to you =]

We know this, but lots of people have met their partners on here. =]
