disassociation?
hey,
if you've never had something traumatic happen to you..[which is what i was told about disassociation..] is it possible that i could be disassociating because of urges to cut? it seems like they go together no matter which one comes first.. just wondering. Kate |
Sorry, I don't really know.
Do you have a therapist/councellor/psychiatrist that you can speak to? May be an idea to speak to them about it.. Sorry, terrible reply. |
Basically, dissociation is a defence mechanism. It relates to stress/anxiety as well as trauma. If you are feeling frightened for any reason - maybe your urges to cut scare you, you could easily dissociate - separate off from the urges, as if you are watching yourself, or feeling apart from yourself.

Back when my cutting was at it's worst I used to dissociate a lot when I was feeling urgy... Don't know why. This is a rubbish reply, sorry, but just wanted to let you know that you aren't alone.

yeah ive never suffered anything traumatic but i still dissociate sometimes. sometimes it is associated with cutting, sometimes it isnt.
its entirely possible that you dissociate because of urges. if dissociation seems to happen at the same time as your urges theres definitely a connection. i've had it where my urges come from dissociation as well, so there may be more at work here. i think its best to try your best to be conscious about what's happening. next time you dissociate/urge, try your best to observe exactly what happens. do your best to keep your focus on yourself and observing what you do. i hope that helps somewhat. take care. brian. |
thanks
lol no such thing as a crappy reply guys..was just looking for some input
i do have a psychologist and shes convinced im not telling her about some traumatic thing or whatever and i sort of just randomly noticed the connection.. thanks for your 2 cents =P |
