Depot Medication for those with schizophrenia:

A woman from the mental health team who was running a group I was doing today recomended an injection to have every two weeks for schizophrenia instead of taking tablets every day. I was just wondering if anyone has this is has heard about it. I think looking on the royal college of psychiatrists website it's this one she was talking about:

Modecate (Fluphenazine decanoate) up to 100 milligrams - 1 injection every 1 to 6 weeks according to response and severity of condition.

She said that the NHS pays for it.

I think this is what my Dad is on, he has an injection once a fortnight; the other tablets he takes are for his dyskensia (don't know if that's related to current meds though). He gets this as his regular medication so yes, it's on the NHS.

Hey hun, my best friend is on clopixall injection once a week but be warned it took ages for them to find the right med and then the right dose! Its good for ppl who have dellusions about not needing their meds. Good luck! xxx

quite a lot of anti-psychotic medciation is available as a depot injection.

You could get it once a fortnight (depending on the med), it can take time to build up in your system so you may have to have a time where you are taking both tablets and injection until your body gets used to it.

It's pretty common, a lot of the time docs prefer it, cos a lot of people don't comply (either on purpose or by accident) with oral meds

(by the way I don't have first hand experience of this, so can't tell you what it's like)

Risperidone seems to be the most popular depot

i was on depot injections and they were good, They gave them to me as they wanted to reduce the amount of meds i had access too when i was suicidal. It is heaps easier than taking medication everyday, unfortunately my heart prob means that i can no longer have them but it was good while it lasted

It's something I'd very much so like to ask my psych about as I have trouble talking my meds both perpously and accidentally sometimes. I think it would be useful for me.
