foods that don't need fridge or freezer?

Can you list some here?

I need inspiration for my food shopping tomorrow.

I don't have a fridge or freezer until next Tuesday, and I need to make sure I have a relatively balanced diet between now and then..

Thanks...

Butter keeps pretty well out of a fridge for several months.
Fresh fruit is usually okay.
Anything in a can, obviously.
Dried pasta and jars of pasta sauce.
Rice " "
Bread
In terms of meat and fish, fish is easy as you can get tuna, salmon, kippers, sardines and all sorts in tins. Apart from tinned ham, you might run into problems with getting meat, though. If you have anywhere cold like a garage or a room without any heating in, you could get some cooked meats like ham or turkey or cheicken or something and keep them in there. They should keep for a few days.

Do you have any freezer bags? If not, try just putting food into lots of carrier bags (as in put food into one carrier bag, put that carier bag into another etc.) to help insulate it and keep it cold.

I don't have many other suggestions. Good luck.

Dried soya mince, silken tofu (can be found in the foods from around the world isle) or tinned/ dried beans and pulses for protein as opposed to meat?

There is a wealth of foods in the canned section of your supermarket. Oh, and the "just add boiling water" section. Some of the pasta things are stuff we get are pretty awesome, have a look at them.

And theres always SPAM!

Thanks. :)

I hardly ever eat meat, so that's not really an issue.

Keep the ideas coming...

as above really.....
fruit, veg, potatoes, pasta, cous cous, tinned soup, bread,
yeah most stuff in tins
veggie stuff like quorn might be your only problem.....It's a bit of a pain really

The only thing I tend to freeze is meat tbh! And I only ever have margarine in my fridge, so there must be a lot of stuff out there. =P

Soup is a good thing to have, and as everyone else has said - canned goods!

Dried milk, whilst not great is okay for short term. I add coffee whitener to it to give it some taste which I know makes some people  but I like it :-) Other than that I can think of nothing no-one else has suggested already!

get some chickpeas and lentils and make dahl.
also pasta/rice with curry/pasta sauce.
eggs tend to be ok out of the fridge.
mushrooms have protein in them too.
you could buy cooked meat/fish the day you plan to use it - it should be ok that way.

ommelettes are your friends!

i would suggest packages of stuff, like instant pasta or rice. Canned stuff. You can get canned meat to make a stew with. Powder milk? Not that great but better than nothing.

For a fridge get a bowl of cold water and cover with a wet tea towel. Thats what I do when camping and it keeps things fresh for a day or so, so you could put meat and dairy in there.

spam :)

I've never had dried milk to drink but i've found that it serves in baked goods when i'm out of the fresh stuff.
Can you get fresh fruits and veggies that don't need to go in the fridge and will keep for a day or two at room temperature?
I do think Spam is good if you slice it kinda thin and cook it crisp like bacon. Don't bother with the turkey spam, its weird and what's the point?

Nuts and seeds are a good source of micronutrients.

Lots of canned goods.
(But then I keep a lot of canned goods and bottled water because I live in earthquake country. People who give advice say three days worth of stuff. I say a weeks worth and don't forget pet food!)

Some of the fruits, nuts and flakes like you find in California do keep pretty well. ;o)

have you thought about wrapping stuff up and sticking it on your window ledge?

it's certainly cold enough for that here!

Mandimoo 16-01-2008 04:38 PM

dig a hole in the ground outside, stick a bowl in (so only the rim is above ground) fill with water, submerge any cold items into it, the temp of the ground will keep it cool, keep it covered and out of sunlight.

as roo said, get some stewed steak for stews and most places sell chicken curry, chicken in white sauce, steak and kidney etc that you can make meals from.

get some canned tomatoes, you can make all sorts from them. veg rissotto (use normal rice and whatever veg you have in house), pasta sauce (add some herbs and a bit of cheese on the top).

i know morrisons sell 'brunches'. potato with things like egg and bacon, sausage and onion. you just open the packet and dry fry for x amount of minutes.

also we sell chow mein, you just add hot water and cook it in a pan.

I'm just back from Sainsbury's. Ewww but it was heavy to carry home.

I found tinned tuna and such. Score!

random.swirls 17-01-2008 09:07 AM
