am on hol. parents have found out i'd still been SI-ing, and i tried being mature and explained to them- but they didn't understand. they don't get that its a weird addiction. they said: 'we just don't understand how you can hurt yourself'. they think im mad. i dunno what to do...

It's hard for them to understand, but all you can do is tell them the truth. I'm sure they would like to protect you from doing it to yourself, but don't know how. Give it a little time, and if that doesn't work, you may have to consider other options. *hugs* That was really brave of you to explain it to them!

Yes, parents can be very difficult. Have you tried explaining that it is something that many people do as a coping mechanism? Perhaps ask them to read up on it a little bit, if they are okay with doing that.
The only way I've tried to explain it to people is by comparing it to a drug. I just say, "if you're dependent on something for so long, you can't just stop." (At least, that's how it is for me) It's so hard for people who aren't familiar with it to understand. I'm sure they care about you immensely and don't want to see you hurting at all. It's often hard for parents to accept that their child is struggling. I agree with Monarkh, just be honest. Good luck and stay safe :) |
fIRST OF ALL HOW ARE YOU FEELING RIGHT NOW? Are u ok just now? You have tried to do the right thing by being honest with your parents, pat on the back to you! Unfortunately people who have not been through self harm themselves tend on the whole not to understand it.(Despite the influx of information over recent years) It may take a while for them to get to grips if they ever do, but just keep trying and let us know how u get on? You should (perhaps (if you've not already done so talk to your own GP about it if you feel you can) Is there anyone else in the family that could perhaps help?
Is there anything specifically that has set it off this time? Is there anything that we can do to help? |
thank you. its just hard to explain because when they say 'how can u hurt yourself', it doesnt register because at the time it doesnt hurt. It's like my parents have a few drinks every night to relax; its just my 'thing'. right now id love to tear myself to shreds!!
|
Ohh, hun. Please don't tear yourself to shreds. *Hugs* Just explain it to them calmly and rationally. Try and put it in perspective.
I can't really tell you exactly what to say because there are varied reasons as to why people do it. Some to concentrate on physical pain more so than emotional, and some do it to show how bad they are feeling on the inside, some people feel they deserve to be hurt... it is different for everyone. I'm sure they are trying hard to understand you as well as help you. Try and be patient with them. xxx. |
Its ignorance on their part! You are doing what you can! Well done! U going to be ok tonight? Promise me that you won't do anything silly!

the really hard thing is i don't want to hurt my parents but self harm took over.. it feels amazing in the moment.
|
i know how that feels we all do....just try and hold on
