'Nervous Picking'

When I first begun self injury it was mainly because I was angry and wanted to hurt someone but didn't want to get into trouble.

Recently I've begun picking at my skin again (which I'm trying my hardest to stop), but this time it's like a nervous thing, like chewing my nails.

Does anyone else self harm like this?

I've always been a 'nervous picker'. I pcik at and destroy wallpaper, remote controls, jumpers, anything.

There are actually a lot of people out there that skin pick just like you. I have never really been one of them... but maybe when you catch yourself doing these destructive things you can try doing something else to keep your hands busy. Have you ever tried knitting or anything lke that? Even painting or drawing my help... you just have to focus the energy elsewhere in a more postive way.

Tons of people do things like that. I know I do... I'm gonna second behindblueeyes. Knitting! I sorta skin pick, really more hair pulling/nail biting/other nervous habits. keeping your hands busy totally helps a bit.

Gosh I do it all the time when I am nervous, it usually starts when I am not aware of what I am doing, but then it gets into a sort of repetitive habit, obession/compulsion, I have a bad habit of picking at my lips, face and around my nails, so I often bleed or get scars or thick dry skin :( I have found sitting on my hands good, but its best to be listening to music as well whilst you do it, or be reading something so your mind is occupied.

Take care x
